Llangollen 2023

International Eisteddfod 2023 – Tuesday 4th July until Sunday 9th July

Each year Soroptimists from Clubs throughout the Region enjoy running the Friendship and Information Centre at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

This year is the 76th Anniversary of the Eisteddfod which dates back to 1947, when the first event was held in this little Welsh town.  The concept was the promotion of peace following the second World War.  Today musicians and dancers come to Llangollen from all over the world to participate in the various competitions.

A busy day at the Eisteddfod bustling with children of all ages, several groups took part in colouring Welsh loving spoons.

We were fortunate to welcome to our tent our Sponsored dance group.  Regional President Susan Heywood presented the leader of the group with a commemorative certificate on behalf of the Region. The group were from Indonesia “ Labschool Kebayoran, Senior school”.  The young female group were delightful and very appreciative.  We were able to see them dance in their competition and pleased that they came 2nd.

The group on stage dancing. Visiting the tent and Presentation.

Following the presentation, the young ladies seen here in the tent chatted and took some refreshments.

I was able to obtain verbal permission from the Teachers before these photos were taken.  We also had a VIP visitor The Secretary of State for Wales David Davies MP, He was extremely interested in our work and display boards and happily took away some of our leaflets. The children are colouring in Welsh Love spoons.

We also had a visit from a fellow Soroptimist from Canberra, Australia who is chatting to Glenys.

Region Meeting Cheshire North Wales & Wirral in Chester

Region Meeting 20th May 2023 saw Soroptimists from our region arriving early at the Queens Hotel, Chester.   Many were carrying bags of sanitary products while others were weighed down by display boards, laptops and other items for their Barbara Dixon Award displays.

There was a real buzz in the room as clubs set up their displays.   8 clubs entered – Anglesey, Bebington, Chester, Heswall, Llandudno, Nantwich & District, Northwich & District and Rhyl & District.   Judging was to take place at lunchtime by Alan Dixon and Lindsey Green.

Our first speaker was Adam Norton a police officer with the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit.   He gave an excellent talk on how “County Lines” worked, explaining how vulnerable individuals were intimidated and eventually became victims of violence and exploitation.   It is believed that approximately 46,000 children are in gangs.   A lot of drugs come out of the Merseyside region.

There was a brief update on micro loans, but there was nothing to report on friendship links.

For the President’s Appeal: The Big Help Out, a collection was made of period products from the 13 clubs across our region and brought to the Queens Hotel, Chester, where we formed a ‘mountain’ of 736 packets which will now be delivered to the food banks in our region.   With a rise in the cost of living and crippling fuel bills, many are struggling with the basics of food and heating and as a consequence period poverty is on the increase.   Food will be the priority on any parent’s list.  Sanitary wear may be considered somewhat a luxury.   We want to give women dignity.

After lunch Lindsey Green, Director of PA, SIGBI, gave a very informative and useful talk on programme action forms and listed the Sustainable Development Goals that our forms should include.

At 2pm the result of the Barbara Dixon Award were announced.   In joint 3rd place were Northwich and Nantwich, 2nd place Rhyl and 1st place Llandudno.   Llandudno’s project showed how they had supported Ukrainian refugees and how the project had expanded to help local residents as well.

Kath Lewis and Penni Nicholas were asked to join the Council as Vice President and Lead of the Communications Team respectively.

The new members’ lunch took place at the Faenol Fawr Hotel, Bodelwyddan on the 26th March 2023 in the beautifully oak paneled Tudor Room.

It was well attended by 10 new members and their mentors, along with many Region Officers;  31 attended in total.  We had some ‘games’ and some more informative aspects to the afternoon – such as an explanation of how SI is structured, how PA works at all levels and an example of a charity shop pop-up in Holywell.

New members were tasked with creating a club project on Bin Twinning and others created a guidance sheet on mentoring new members which will be distributed to Clubs in due course.  The event was greatly successful with a warm atmosphere and gratitude expressed by attendees.

Congratulations to Region Clubs

This year our Region clubs again supported this campaign #OrangeTheWorld #16DaysOfActivism against gender based violence.

Thanks to all our #Soroptimist Region clubs who have taken part in this campaign either by taking action, holding events or posting Social Media Campaigns.
Congratulations #Soroptimists on a meaningful, poignant, innovative and interesting #16days

Congratulations South Caernarfonshire

For an excellent Social Media Campaign ‘She Only…” posted each day from 25th November, the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10th December, Human Rights Day- to mark #16DaysOfActivism, #OrangeTheWorld.

There has been much acclaim on Face book – Club, Region, Federation and world wide for this  innovative, interesting, sometimes poignant, and emotive campaign.

The Region Communications team asked the club WHY and HOW they achieved this

SI South Caernarfonshire members says: “Following our successful “orange stone campaign “ in 2021 a Programme Action  sub committee set about planning for  2022

We decided to use orange shoes based on thoughts about the impact of piles  of shoes in the holocaust and a campaign in Italy where shoes  were nailed to a wall to represent murdered women

We rapidly decided we could not waste wearable shoes

As the theme was femicide we thought of photos in situations where women are more vulnerable to  very serious domestic abuse eg going out without him to her sisters hen do

We thought the last one day 16 should be a woman driven to suicide

We took quite a lot of photos and  rapidly realised the empty shoes  had to be prominent and the photos  were more effective in black and white

Luckily we had a member’s  relative who could add the orange slogans and “colour the shoes orange”

Some scenes just did not work but eventually we settled on the 16 we used”

A Fabulous Campaign #Soroptimist South Caernarfonshire – Congratulations

Region Meeting Change of Insignia

Congratulations and all the very best of wishes to new Region President Susan Haywood.

At the Region Meeting on Saturday 19th November the Region welcomed Susan Haywood as our new President, and we were finally able to take some lovely photos of the change of Insignia.

Huge thanks to Immediate Past Region President Yvonne Johns, who despite many difficulties enjoyed an excellent year as Region President

Region President Susan Haywood’s Address

It is an overwhelming privilege to have been elected as the incoming Regional President.  There are some resplendent footsteps to fill from previous inspiring and diligent women who have preceded me.  I have a great team of Officers who are the stalwarts of Region; I am the one who is transient with only a year to wreak havoc or, better still, bring about unity!

My tag line for this year is New Chapters Generate New Stories.  Little wonder that I have chosen this with my background as a teacher of English.  But this goes beyond my love of literature and language.  It is a vision for the Region that you will write through your Club projects and friendships.  There is one thing that Soroptimists have taught me, is that I am amidst an unbelievable group of women.  I am ever in awe of your generosity, your caring natures and your ingenuity.   New Chapters Generate New Stories, but we have room in our organisation for both the old steadfast values and the new innovative ideas.  You are the ones who are inspirational to me.

It is not my intention to have a theme this year.  Speakers will be varied and incorporate many of the 5 Ps.  Yvonne ably covered many aspects of climate change, as did the Belfast Conference.  This is not to denigrate the urgency of the need to save our planet.  If I omit Climate Change it is not through a lack of need or care;  I just feel that there are other aspects of the lives of women and girls that need our support as well.  I know that Clubs will continue and expand their work on Climate Change.  In the Guardian last week the front page headline was Climate Crisis.  I feel we need to alter our vocabulary to calling it this.  Climate Change suggests a small tweak in the temperatures over time, but we all know that it is at the point of Crisis and almost beyond reversible repair.

I have some plans for the year – they are not all fully formed yet, but I can tell you what is in the pipeline.

We will have three face to face Region meetings, two at the Queens Hotel in Chester and one at the Imperial Hotel in Llandudno.  Members expressed their concern at the cost of region meetings, so I have taken that on board and the meeting in Llandudno will be without a lunch.  You can book a bar meal at the hotel, nip out to a cafe or have fish and chips on the prom.  The fee will be considerably reduced as it will be for refreshments and the hire of the room.  Feedback from this will determine what members want.  Sales tables will be present at two of the Region meetings.

Similarly, I would like to meet with Officers and Reps face to face.  I have booked the Imperial Hotel in Llandudno for our first meeting on Saturday 21 January.  One of the discussions will be as to whether we continue to have face to face meetings, Zoom or a mix of the two.

PA Officer Iris Batman and myself have arranged another face to face meeting with club Programme Action Officers.  This is next Tuesday 22 November at the Grosvenor Arms in Aldford, Chester in a private room.  It will give us the opportunity to hear what projects the Clubs are currently working on and to see if there is a common thread. The same could be arranged for other Officers, if they wish.

There will be a new member’s lunch on Sunday 26 March 2023 at Faenol Fawr, St Asaph.  This will be open to all new members since late 2019 who did not attend the event earlier this year. The invitation will be extended to the new member’s mentor to accompany them.  Invitations will be going out soon.

Social events are important as they are the bonding agent in our close relationships.  I have already organised one such event and that was to Chatsworth.  The number of emails that Wendy and I have received in praise of the trip are testament that you enjoy and appreciate them.

It is my intention that we will have another trip to the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.  The Soroptimist statue, which was damaged in a storm, has been renewed and should fill us with pride to see it.  This will be on Saturday 17th June 2023.

Finally, I am sure you will want to thank IPP Yvonne.  She could so easily have packed it all in, given her crippling illness and personal loss, but she triumphed against adversity.  Despite it all, she didn’t miss a single Region or Officer’s meeting and her diary remained full throughout her year.  I have been moved by her tenacity and drive.  She is a formidable woman and has put her heart and soul into her year as President.

I am looking forward to working with a great team of knowledgeable and erstwhile Officers and Janet Murfin as President Elect.  I am excited for my year in office and will do my utmost to serve you.

CHAIR OF UKPAC

We are very pleased to announce the new Chair of UKPAC (The United Kingdom Programme Action Committee) is Gillie O’Rourke of SI Bebington.  Gillie was formerly the Regional Programme Action Officer. We are very proud of her, and wish her well in her new role

Gillie comments on her election to this prestigious position.

“I am extremely honoured to have been elected by my peers to the role of Chair of UKPAC.  The role is challenging and wide-ranging covering, as it does, not only working with Regional Programme Action Reps, but also having regular meetings with national partners/organisations as well as the UN and Europe.

We are now a completely new team leading United Kingdom Programme Action (starting with our new Programme Director, Lindsey Green). As a new team we are looking at our strategy and extending the work of the current groups which cover MDS, SDAC and Violence Against Women. Ours main aims are:

  • To become more outward facing by working with partners as well as Regions and Clubs to encourage more lobbying and advocacy.
  • To develop strong, interesting and exciting projects which have a real impact on the lives of women and girls (especially around safety).
  • To promote work currently being undertaken by Clubs and encourage more cross Regional and Club working by providing support and more toolbox information.
  • To continue the excellent work carried out over the past 4 years.
  • By being more outward facing people will know more about what we do and will be encouraged to join Soroptimist International.

The new UKPAC team are:

Chair                           Gillie O’Rourke

Vice Chair                  Christine Corless

Communications      Keji Moses

Treasurer                   Ann Hodgson

Secretary                   Christina Rollanson
